Language Simplification

Employee benefit plans often contain written descriptions of the details of the plan for employees. These plans are frequently quite complex and are written by well-educated, knowledgeable plan experts. A common difficulty with the written descriptions is that the intended readers do not have the reading skills to understand the content. This reading comprehension problem is particularly acute with employees who have a different first language, for example, native Spanish speakers reading a description in English. The result of this communication difficulty is that some employees do not understand the benefits information, or additional Human Resources labor must be spent explaining the content. ALTA's has a thorough understanding of reading capabilities through our language testing services. We know how to write content so that it is understandable to relatively low level readers of the language. We can take your content and simplify the writing, yet retain the complexity of the ideas and processes. Alternately, we can train your benefits writers to write at a lower level of reading performance.

Policy Translation

In some situations employee benefits policies need to be translated into another language. For example, Spanish-speaking workers in the U.S. may not have sufficient English reading skills to understand even simplified English (described above), or a new plant may be opening in a location that has a different first language among the employees.
